Nested sequences are great when you need to group things together, but sometimes they just get in the way. If you’ve ever accidentally nested something or changed your mind, here’s how you can unnest in Premiere Pro without redoing your whole edit.

Let’s keep it simple.

1. Open the Nested Sequence

Double-click on the nested clip in your timeline. This opens it up in a new tab where you can see all the original clips inside.

2. Select and Copy All Clips

Inside that nested sequence, press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Cmd + A (Mac) to select everything. Then copy them using Ctrl + C (Windows) or Cmd + C (Mac).

3. Paste Back Into Your Main Timeline

Go back to your main sequence tab, delete the nested clip, and paste using Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (Mac). Your original clips will now be back where they belong.

And that’s it, you’ve unnested!

Quick Tip: Why Not Just Double-Click?

Double-clicking only opens the nest for editing. It doesn’t break it apart in your timeline. If you want those individual clips back where they started, copying and pasting is still the easiest way.

Final Thoughts

Premiere Pro doesn’t have a direct “Unnest” button, but this quick copy-paste method works just fine once you know how it works. It takes less than a minute and saves you from having to rebuild anything from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove nest in Premiere Pro?

You can't directly "unnest" with one click, but you can remove a nest by opening it, copying its contents, and pasting them back into your main timeline where the nest was.

How to exit a nested sequence?

Just click on the tab of your main sequence at the top of the timeline panel. That takes you out of the nested view and back into your regular edit.

How to get Premiere Pro back to normal?

If panels look weird or you're stuck inside a nested sequence, go to Window > Workspaces > Reset to Saved Layout. That usually brings everything back to its default view.

How to deselect sequence in Premiere Pro?

Click anywhere outside of any clip or use Shift + Ctrl + A (Windows) or Shift + Cmd + A (Mac) to deselect everything in your timeline or project panel.

Is there another way to unnest without copy-pasting?

Yes! Disable the Nest Sequence button at the top left of your timeline (next to Snap). Then drag your nested sequence into another part of your timeline. It will come in as individual clips instead of one block, just make sure V1, V2 etc., are enabled first.
